When should my child have their first dental visit?
By age one, or within 6 months of their first tooth. Early visits help kids feel comfortable and let us catch small concerns before they become big ones.
How often should my child have a checkup and cleaning?
Every six months. Regular visits keep teeth healthy, catch cavities early and help your child build good brushing habits.
What is fluoride varnish, and do you offer a fluoride-free option?
Fluoride varnish is a quick, painless coating that strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities. We also offer a fluoride-free varnish for families who prefer it.
Why do you check my child's breathing at a dental visit?
How a child breathes affects how their jaw grows, how they sleep and even how they focus. We look for signs like snoring, mouth breathing and teeth grinding so we can help early.
My child snores or breathes through their mouth. Should I be concerned?
It's worth checking. Snoring and mouth breathing can be linked to airway, tongue or jaw development concerns. We'll assess your child and explain your options.
What is myofunctional therapy for kids?
Myofunctional therapy uses simple, guided exercises to train the tongue, lips and face muscles. It can improve tongue posture, breathing, chewing and swallowing, and our trained hygienists make it fun for kids.
How do I know if my child has a tongue tie?
Signs can include trouble latching as a baby, speech or eating difficulties, mouth breathing or a tongue that can't lift easily. We'll gently assess tongue movement and function, and recommend a plan if needed.
What is MASPE+ expansion, and is it right for my child?
MASPE+ is a custom expander that gently widens the upper jaw to make room for teeth and support easier breathing. We'll check your child's bite and jaw growth to see if it's a good fit.
At what age should my child's bite be checked?
By age 7. Orthodontists recommend an early bite check while the jaw is still growing, so problems can be guided before they become harder to fix.
Do you accept CDCP for children in Guelph?
Yes. Both Westwood and Starwood Dental accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan and Healthy Smiles Ontario for eligible children, plus most insurance plans.
