The Canadian Dental Care Plan, or CDCP as it is popularly known, is a program funded by the government of Canada to provide oral health facilities to its citizens. It came into effect in December 2023. So, now, even if you are an uninsured citizen of Canada, do not worry, as this program will help you receive dental care easily and conveniently. We understand that you might have many questions right now. We have got you covered with our blog. Stay with us as we help you navigate the CDCP.

Who Qualifies for the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

To know if you qualify for the CDCP, check if you fulfill all the four criteria below:

  1. You do not have access to dental insurance

  2. You and your spouse or common-law partner must have filed your tax returns in Canada (this is required to assess your family’s income)

  3. Your adjusted family net income is <$90,000

  4. You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes

When to Apply and How to Apply?

You can apply online immediately if you are a person aged 65 or above, if you are an adult with a valid Disability Tax Credit Card certificate for 2023 and if you are a child under 18. For the rest, applications will be open in the year 2025. Here is the list of things that you will need to apply online for CDCP:

  • Social Insurance Number

  • Date of birth

  • Full name

  • Home and mailing address

  • List of Dental Coverage through government social programs (if applicable)

  • Notice of Assessment for your and your spouse or common-law partner’s filed tax return 2023

When Can You Visit an Oral Health Provider?

Once you have applied and qualified for the CDCP, the Government of Canada will share your information with Sun Life as they manage the CDCP for them. They will enroll you in the CDCP and send you a welcome package which will include:

  • Information about the CDCP

  • Your member card

  • Your benefits start date (it will be mentioned in the welcome letter, not on your member card)

To find an oral health provider near you, consult Sun Life’s CDCP Provider Search or call the Sunlife CDCP Contact Centre at 1-888-888-8110.
